Bigfoot java application12/28/2023 ![]() Two-way stretch fabric wasn’t invented until the 1980s. Secondly, a costume of that calibre would require two-way stretch fabric to move like that. So where would Patterson and Gimlin have got the money to produce an ape costume better than those being funded by million pound film studio budgets? Later, the Philip Morris costume company claimed they’d made the costume but they were unable to replicate it even 40 years later. Look at the costumes in 1968’s Planet of the Apes – that film would have employed the best costume makers in the world on the biggest budgets, and those costumes fade in comparison. With modern day technology, the footage seems clumsy and blurry, but it was state of the art back in the late Sixties – the two cowboys who filmed it, Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin, had hired an expensive camera for the exact purpose of catching a Bigfoot on camera – and it is, to my mind, absolute proof that Bigfoot exists.Ĭonsider this: if it is a costume, it’s better than any costume designer has ever made, then or since. A female Bigfoot walks across a creek bottom, turning to face the camera for a moment. You may not know its name but you would have seen it. Since then, I’ve done some research – and listened to 16 hours of the Astonishing Legends podcast – and my belief in Bigfoot is based on the Patterson-Gimlin film of 1967. I walked into that museum as a non-believer. He came across as a really smart, switched-on guy, had an answer for all my questions, and he made it clear that he didn’t care one iota if people believed him or not. He then went to Stanford, wrote a paper about Bigfoot for an anthropology class, and then went to work for decades in Silicon Valley.ĭid I think he was mad? Not at all. It’s full of Bigfoot merchandise, and first person accounts, but what was most fascinating was my chat with Michael himself during the 15 minutes we talked, he told me that he felt compelled to set up the museum because as a child he had seen a Bigfoot. It’s basically a two-room building and the founder, Michael Rugg, lives out the back. ![]() When I turned up at the Bigfoot museum, right next to a redwood forest, it was pretty unremarkable. That’s why people make films about the Mothman and the Jersey Devil. It is like dinosaurs: we can’t go to a zoo to see them so they’re intriguing. My generation was in thrall with The X-Files – we wanted to believe in these fun conspiracy theories, all of which drew inspiration from strange happenings around the world. There’s a part of you that wants this all to be true. I’m pretty sure I had a book as a child which I assume was called Unsolved Mysteries – they always are – which talked through the Loch Ness monster, alien autopsies, and Bigfoot was definitely in there. That involved going to Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world, visiting a water tower that had been made to look like a huge can of peaches and dropping in at the Bigfoot Discovery Museum in Felton. So I hired a car and planned a mini road trip. ![]() ![]() I, too, was suitably cynical when, during an extended work trip, I found myself in the Bay area of California with a weekend to kill. I know most people will laugh at this, and I get it. But as for the existence of Bigfoot itself – I absolutely am a believer.
